Crucial Questions Arise As Paris Police Chief Quits Over UEFA Champions League Final Show Of Shame!
The French government has ordered the replacement of the Chief of Paris Police, Didier Lallement, on July 21, 2022, following the conclusions of investigations into the horror show put up by his officers during the last UEFA Champions League final played at the Stade de Prince on May 28, 2022.
The iconic match between Spanish champions Real Madrid CF and English giants Liverpool FC was marred by terrible crowd violence before and after the finale.
Thousands of Liverpool fans were allegedly sprayed with tear gas, crushed, and denied entry into the stadium despite presently valid tickets for the event by the police.
This led to outrage and massive cries against the French government, football association, and police officers by millions of people who witnessed the horror worldwide.
Sadly for him, Didier initially blamed the chaos on Liverpool fans. Still, he later retracted his statements after a preliminary round of investigations into the matter revealed many facts in June 2022. He went on to say that the failure of his officers wounded him but that he is “the only one responsible” for all that happened.
According to reports, Didier sent a letter to his officers on July 20, 2022, where he reportedly stated that he was leaving his post with the chaos at the finale as the only stain on his three-and-a-half-year tenure.
“I’m still wounded from the failure of the Stade de France.
Certainly, that evening, we saved lives, but the reputation of the country was damaged. That the French flag has been sullied is a pain for me and a responsibility that I must assume,” he said.
Didier was reportedly due to retire from the Force ahead of his 66th birthday on August 27, 2022. Although there are attempts to play down his earlier exit as not being related to the debacle, we have a crucial question we would like to ask from our observations on this matter:
(1) Will Nigeria ever experience a time when a public officer would take responsibility for the ineptitude and gross failure on his watch and honorably resign?
It’s almost like every Nigerian government official takes an oath never to be responsible for their actions as they assume office because it is just inexplicable!
With all the kidnappings and abductions, ambushes and slaughtering of soldiers, daring attacks on prison facilities, airports, trains, and complete closures of major interstate highways by armed bandits and terrorists, not one of President Muhammadu Buhari or any of the so-called security chiefs he appointed has ever shown a trace of such integrity!
Nothing has ever been as terrible as it is in every sector of the Nigerian economy. Yet, President Buhari and his cohorts would rather swallow a porcupine than admit their incompetence and resign.
Didier could have insisted on staying and seeing out his tenure scheduled to end in August, yet he chose to resign now because of the shame of the failure under his watch.
The final question now is: Do these so-called leaders and government officials in Nigeria have any iota of shame, integrity, and dignity?
