Sad Realities As US VP Kamala Harris Laments That Black Families Need To Hang Pictures Of White Friends To Boost Home Values
The American Vice President Kamala Harris recently disclosed to the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People that black families reportedly “encourage” white friends to hang photos of themselves in their homes during appraisals so the values of their homes can be boosted.
In her speech, VP Harris said: “We are hearing the cases of, for example, a black family trying to sell their home, and they get the appraisal and they just know it is not the true value of their home.
And so you’ve heard the stories about how they’ll then encourage friends of the family — a white family — to come in. And then the white family will put the pictures up of their family. And then that appraisal gets done, and it’s for a much higher value. Same house. Same neighborhood.
It is because of a clear history of segregation, restrictive covenants and redlining that long denied black homeowners the opportunity to take full advantage of the wealth-building power of homeownership. That inequity continues today in the home appraisal system.”
According to a report released in August 2020, many companies were reportedly violating the Fair Housing Act by under-appraising the homes of Black families.
A popular anti-discrimination change agent, Abena Horton, also shared her similar experience on her website recently. According to Abena, the value of her home shot up by over $166,000 after she and her white husband removed all their family pictures in the house and had the man alone stay in the house when realtors came for another appraisal.
This reports point to a very sad fact that Black segregation and racism against the Black race doesn’t look like it’s going away any time soon, and sadly, even in the United States of America, too.
If the value of the same building can change by only placing a white person’s picture in it – without any structural upgrades and repairs done on it, then this is a serious problem that needs urgent resolution!
